February in Rock County: A Love Letter to All the Ways We Celebrate

by Jeff Zuelke

February isn't just about one day and a box of chocolates (though we'd never say no to that). It's the whole month — a stretch of cozy Wisconsin winter that's practically begging us to slow down, lean in, and actually enjoy the people and places right in our own backyard. Whether you're planning something sweet for your someone special, looking for a fun outing with the kids, or just need an excuse to get out of the house before cabin fever wins — Rock County has got you covered. Here are some of our favorite ways to celebrate the love that's all around us this February.

The Date Night Edition 🍷

Let's start with the good stuff. Rock County is quietly becoming one of the best spots in southern Wisconsin for a real, honest-to-goodness date night — no reservation at some overpriced chain restaurant required.

Genisa Wine Bar** in downtown Janesville is the kind of place that makes you forget you're in a small Midwestern city. Tucked into a gorgeous 1865 Italianate building right on the Rock River, Genisa blends Italian-inspired dishes with a wine list that actually makes you feel something. The vibe is elegant without being stuffy — perfect for a February evening where the river view does half the romantic heavy lifting for you.

If you want something a little more laid-back but still undeniably impressive, **drafthouse** is the move. This downtown gastropub has become a local favorite for a reason: creative cocktails, a stunning whiskey selection, and food that punches way above its weight. The blue cheese steak and the salmon have earned rave reviews from couples who came in expecting a casual bite and left having one of the best dinners they'd ever had.

And for something truly upscale? **Wissota Chophouse** delivers the kind of steakhouse experience that feels like a celebration. Rich flavors, beautiful plating, and an atmosphere that says "tonight is a big deal" without having to try too hard.

Pro tip for the wine lovers:** Don't sleep on **Northleaf Winery** right here in Milton. Housed in a restored 1844 wheat warehouse on the National Register of Historic Places — yes, really — Northleaf offers complimentary wine tastings, chocolate pairings that are genuinely incredible, and live music on Friday nights. They even have a cozy Guest House above the Bistro if you want to make a whole weekend out of it. A five-minute drive from your own backyard, and it feels like a getaway.

The "Wow, That's Actually Romantic" Edition

Sometimes the most romantic things aren't dinner and drinks. Sometimes they're the moments in between.

Candlelight: Valentine's Day Special at The Venue in downtown Janesville on February 14th is exactly the kind of event that turns an ordinary Valentine's into something memorable. Live music performed under candlelight in a gorgeous historic space — it's intimate, it's beautiful, and it's the kind of thing you'll actually talk about afterward. Tickets are available now, so don't wait on this one.

Want to catch a show? Janesville Little Theatre is running *Bus Stop* through February 15th — and if you know anything about this classic, you know it's a sharp, funny, surprisingly tender story about love, desire, and the messy business of being human. It's charming, it's clever, and it's a perfect excuse to settle into a theater seat with someone you like spending time with.

If you're willing to make the quick 20-minute drive to Fort Atkinson, Fireside Theatre is running *Beehive — The '60s Musical* through February 22nd. Broadway-caliber talent, incredible energy, and fine dining included with your ticket. It's a full evening experience that feels miles away from an ordinary night out.

The "Let's Skate, Baby" Edition ⛸️

There's something undeniably fun about grabbing hands on the ice — whether you're smooth and graceful or hilariously wobbly. Rock County has options for both.

Janesville Ice Arena offers public skating sessions throughout the month, and it's one of those timeless, no-fuss activities that works for literally everyone. Skate rentals are available, the arena is well-kept, and there's something genuinely joyful about just... gliding around together. Plus, it's home to the Janesville Jets, so if you want to catch a hockey game and cheer your lungs out with your crew, February is a great time to do it.

The brand-new Woodman's Sports & Convention Center is also hosting skating events this winter, including an Olympic-themed skate that's open to all ages and abilities. It's a gorgeous, modern facility and it's right here in Janesville — no excuse not to check it out.

The "Bring the Whole Crew" Edition 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Love isn't just romantic. It's the kind that happens at the bowling alley when your kid finally knocks down a spare. It's the kind that happens at the playground when the littlest one conquers the slide. February is a great month to just... be together.

El-Ra Bowl has been a Rock County staple since 1959, and it's still one of the best places to spend an evening as a family. Sixteen lanes, auto-scoring, bumpers for the kids, a full grill menu, and a lounge for the grown-ups. It's loud, it's fun, and nobody leaves unhappy.

Camden Playground — aka "The Castle Playground" — in Palmer Park is a kid-favorite that's worth bundling up for, even in February. It's creative, it's imaginative, and it's the kind of place where kids disappear into their own little world for a blissfully long time.

And here's one for the curious minds in your life: Milton House Museum is a quick stop that's genuinely fascinating. Originally built in 1844 as a stagecoach inn, it later became a safe house on the Underground Railroad. Guided tours let you explore the actual tunnel used to help freedom seekers — it's history you can touch, and it hits differently when you're standing right inside it.

The "Get Outside, It's Not THAT Cold" Edition 🥾

Wisconsin winters are meant to be lived in, not just survived. And Rock County has some seriously underrated outdoor beauty right now.

The Ice Age National Scenic Trail winds right through Janesville, and the Devil's Staircase section is one of the best winter hikes around. It follows a bluff along the Rock River with gorgeous views, some scrambling, and that particular kind of peace that only comes from being outside in the cold with nobody but the trees. Pair it with a thermos of hot cocoa and you've got yourself a genuinely perfect afternoon.

Rotary Botanical Gardens is open Monday through Friday in February (10 AM – 4 PM), and while it might not have the big summer blooms right now, there's a quiet, winter beauty to wandering through 20 acres of themed gardens when everything is covered in a dusting of snow. The Japanese Garden, the paths along the water — it's serene in a way that's hard to find in the middle of a busy month.

The Sweet Tooth Pit Stop 🍫

No February roundup is complete without a sugar stop. Head to The Sugar Exchange in downtown Janesville for the kind of treats that make everything better. It's a quick detour on any date night or family outing, and trust us — you'll want the dessert.

And Now, the Part That Really Matters 🏡

Here's the thing about all of these places, all of these moments, all of these little adventures we just mapped out for you — they all start and end at home. And not just any home. *Your* home.

There's a kind of love that doesn't get enough credit, and it lives in the place where you hang your coat at the end of the day. It's in the kitchen where someone is making coffee before the sun comes up. It's in the living room where the kids are sprawled out on the floor with a board game. It's in the quiet moment at the end of the evening when you finally sit down together and the house just... settles around you. That's not just a house. That's the place where your life actually happens — where the memories stack up, where the ordinary days become the ones you look back on with a smile. Finding that place, making it yours, building something real inside its walls — *that* is the greatest love story of all. And we'd be honored to help you write yours.
