Honor the Day. Love the Weekend. Rock County, WI — Memorial Day 2026

by Jeff Zuelke

Before the weekend even begins, before the first flag goes up or the first parade steps off, there's a moment worth sitting with. Before we dive into parades, water ski shows, and Saturday morning farmers' markets, we want to take a quiet moment to acknowledge what this holiday is truly about. Memorial Day honors the men and women of our Armed Forces who gave their lives in service to this country. For the military families who live right here in Rock County — the spouses who held down the home front, the parents who sent their children off and waited, the veterans who carry invisible weight alongside their medals — this weekend means something far beyond a three-day getaway. To all of you: thank you. Your sacrifice, and the sacrifice of your loved ones, is seen, honored, and never forgotten in communities like ours.

And in a very real way, the spirit of Memorial Day lives inside everything that makes small-town Wisconsin so special. The parade that winds through downtown Janesville. The flags lining Main Street. The neighbors who still show up, year after year, to stand on the curb and watch veterans march by. Rock County knows how to honor its own — and this weekend, you'll feel it everywhere you turn.

That said, once you've paused to reflect, there is a full, beautiful weekend ahead of you. Memorial Day 2026 falls on Monday, May 25th, which means you've got three days to soak in everything this corner of Wisconsin has to offer. Whether you've lived here your whole life or you've just started putting down roots, this is one of the best weekends of the year to get out and experience why so many people choose to call Rock County home. Here's your local's guide to making the most of it.

The Janesville Memorial Day Parade — A Downtown Tradition Worth Every Step of the Way

There are some annual traditions that just feel like home, and the Janesville Memorial Day Parade is one of them. Organized by the Janesville Patriotic Society in memory of the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country, this parade has been a cornerstone of the community for generations — and 2026 is no different.

The route runs down West Milwaukee Street and turns north on Main Street, moving through the heart of downtown Janesville in a procession that is equal parts solemn and celebratory. Marching alongside the crowd are members of Parker and Craig High School bands, various veterans units, and community organizations that represent the best of what this city is made of. But what makes the Janesville parade genuinely distinctive — what sets it apart from every other parade you've seen — are the ceremonial stops along the way. At the Doughboy statue, the procession pauses for a wreath placement and moment of reflection. Then, at the Rock River bridge, there's a rifle salute and another wreath is laid on the water below. The river itself becomes part of the tribute. It's moving in the truest sense of the word, and if you've never stood there to witness it, this is the year to go.

Bring the kids. Bring the grandparents. Bring a lawn chair and your coffee. This is the kind of thing that reminds you why community matters.

Beloit's United Veterans Memorial Day Parade — Another Reason to Love This Region

Just about twenty minutes south, Beloit hosts its own powerful tribute to our fallen heroes. The United Veterans Memorial Day Parade steps off at 9:00 a.m. on Blackhawk Boulevard near Oakland and makes its way through downtown Beloit and South Beloit, wrapping up near College Street and Horace White Park. If you've got family members spread between Janesville and Beloit, or if you simply want to take in two celebrations in one weekend, this is absolutely worth the short drive down I-90. Rock County, in both its cities and its smaller communities, shows up for its veterans — and seeing that firsthand is something that sticks with you.

The Rock Aqua Jays Are Back — And Memorial Day Weekend Is Opening Night

Here's something that makes Memorial Day weekend in Janesville genuinely unlike anywhere else in the Midwest: this is the weekend the Rock Aqua Jays take to the water for the very first time each season. And if you've never been, stop whatever you're doing and put it on your calendar right now.

The Rock Aqua Jays are the most decorated water ski show team in history — full stop. With over 60 total tournament victories, 23 national championships, and a Guinness World Record for the largest pyramid ever performed on water (55 people, in case you were wondering), this team is a legitimate world-class athletic organization that happens to call Janesville, Wisconsin home. Every season, they reveal a brand-new theme and choreograph an entire show around it — complete with breathtaking pyramids, ballet skiing, barefoot runs, and jaw-dropping jumps that will have your jaw on the floor whether you're 7 or 70.

And here's the best part: it's completely free. Free admission, free parking, all of it. The shows take place at RAJ Stadium right inside Traxler Park at 600 N. Main Street, and this year's opening show kicks off Memorial Day weekend with a 7:00 PM start time on Sunday evening, May 25th. Concessions are available, the setting along the Rock River is beautiful, and the energy in that stadium when the skiers hit the water for the first time each season is something you genuinely can't replicate. After the show, they'll continue performing every Wednesday and Sunday evening throughout the summer — but there's something extra special about being there on night one.

Rotary Botanical Gardens — Twenty Acres of Pure Wisconsin Beauty

If your idea of a perfect Memorial Day morning involves wandering through one of the most stunning botanical gardens in the entire Midwest, Rotary Botanical Gardens is waiting for you. Located at 1455 Palmer Drive in Janesville, this award-winning 20-acre non-profit garden is one of those places that locals sometimes take for granted — until a friend from out of town visits and absolutely refuses to leave.

The gardens are in full spring bloom right now, which means the timing couldn't be better. Memorial Day weekend hours run 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM on weekends, giving you a generous window to explore every corner at whatever pace feels right. And this year, Rotary Botanical Gardens just launched a brand-new summer program called Garden After Hours — a weekly Thursday evening series running through September 24th. It's the perfect excuse to stop by after work, bring some friends, and experience the gardens in a completely different light as the day winds down. While that's a Thursday tradition, knowing the gardens are entering their most vibrant season makes a weekend visit all the more rewarding.

Whether you're looking for a peaceful morning stroll, a lovely backdrop for family photos, or simply a place to sit and breathe, the Rotary Botanical Gardens deliver every single time.

The Janesville Farmers Market — Saturday Morning, Done Right

If you're in town on Saturday, May 23rd, there is exactly one place you should be at 8:00 AM, and that's the Janesville Farmers Market at Town Square in downtown Janesville. This is a completely local, completely outdoor market featuring the kinds of vendors that remind you why buying local matters — fresh produce, pasture-raised meats, Wisconsin cheeses, farm eggs, honey, homemade baked goods, locally grown plants, handcrafted goods, and more. It's the kind of market where you show up for tomatoes and leave with a jar of hot pepper jam, a loaf of sourdough, and a bouquet of fresh flowers that makes your whole kitchen smell like summer.

The Janesville Farmers Market runs every Saturday from May through October, and the Memorial Day weekend edition is always a lively, community-filled morning. It's a wonderful way to kick off the long weekend — grab coffee from a downtown café, wander the stalls, and see half the people you know while you're at it. That's Rock County doing what it does best.

Head to Beloit for the Sky Carp — Minor League Baseball at Its Very Best

Here's a weekend itinerary idea that is hard to beat: spend Memorial Day Monday at the parade, then head down to Beloit on Tuesday evening for a Beloit Sky Carp game at ABC Supply Stadium. The Sky Carp open their home series against the Lake County Captains on Tuesday, May 26th at 6:05 PM, with games continuing through May 31st — so you've got the entire week to make it work if the weekend fills up.

As the High-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins, the Sky Carp bring serious professional baseball talent to a beautiful riverfront stadium, with all the fun of a minor league experience layered on top — themed nights, fireworks, great food, and their beloved mascot Poopsie who is, frankly, a legend in his own right. Single-game tickets are incredibly affordable, making this a perfect family outing without the big-league price tag. ABC Supply Stadium is one of the best ballparks in the region, and a warm early-summer evening there with a brat in hand and baseball on the field is the kind of simple joy that feels like it belongs in a postcard.

Get Outside — Rock County's Trails and the Rock River Are Calling

Beyond the organized events and attractions, Memorial Day weekend is simply a magnificent time to be outdoors in Rock County. The Rock River Trail system winds through Janesville and offers accessible, scenic walking and biking routes for all ability levels. Traxler Park itself — the home of the Rock Aqua Jays — is one of the most beautiful spots along the river, and a visit there in the late afternoon before an evening water ski show is a genuinely perfect way to spend a few hours.

For those who prefer a little more structure to their outdoor time, the trail systems around Milton and the surrounding area offer peaceful routes through Wisconsin countryside that is in absolute peak form right now. Everything is green, everything is blooming, and the weather in late May here tends to be just warm enough to feel like summer without yet being summer. It's the sweet spot of the Wisconsin outdoor calendar, and it's worth taking full advantage of it.

Families with young kids might also want to mark their calendars for the future — the Children's Museum of Rock County is currently under construction in the former First National Bank building at 100 W. Milwaukee Street in downtown Janesville, with an expected opening later in 2026. It's yet another sign that this community is investing in itself, in its families, and in its future.

Why This Weekend Captures Everything We Love About Living Here

The Zuelke Real Estate Team has had the privilege of helping families plant roots in Rock County for years, and what we can tell you with complete confidence is this: the people who move to Janesville, Milton, and Beloit don't just buy houses. They find community. They find the kind of place where a Memorial Day parade still draws a crowd, where world-class athletes perform for free because they love their hometown, where neighbors show up at the farmers market and stay for an hour longer than they planned because they keep running into people they know.

We get asked all the time what makes this area special — and Memorial Day weekend answers that question better than we ever could. It's the parade on Main Street. It's the rifle salute on the Rock River bridge. It's 10,000 people packed into Traxler Park watching a pyramid of water skiers rise against a Wisconsin sunset. It's the Sky Carp games and the botanical gardens and the farmers market banter and the trails and the fact that this whole weekend costs almost nothing, because the best things here always have.

If you're already here, you know exactly what we mean. And if you're thinking about making Rock County your home — whether you're searching for your first house, relocating for work, or just wondering if this is the kind of place worth putting down real roots — we'd love to sit down with you and show you what's possible. Memorial Day weekend is a wonderful time to explore, and the Zuelke Real Estate Team is always here when you're ready to take the next step.

From our team to yours — have a safe, meaningful, and joy-filled Memorial Day weekend. And to every veteran and military family in Rock County: thank you, from the bottom of our hearts.
